1/3 OF PRODUCE IS TOSSED DUE TO COSMETIC ISSUES
Farmers lose up to 1/3 of their harvest due to cosmetic issues. Food that’s never eaten uses 25% of our fresh water and 18% of our arable land.
BABY CARROTS AREN’T REALLY A THING
Perfectly packaged fruit and veggies leave a lot to be desired. Those baby carrots and watermelon cubes leave behind nutritious and yummy peels, cutoffs, and tidbits. Food waste is a much larger challenge than just whole ugly fruits and vegetables alone.
WE EXPECT ABUNDANCE AT THE SUPERMARKET
Shiny apples piled high, and endless cartons of perfect spinach leaves–that just ain’t normal. Supermarkets dump close to 40 percent of food (!!) due to overbuying and food spoilage.
$218 BILLION OF PURCHASED FOODS GO TO THE DUMP
We buy food we don’t have time to cook, leftovers are forgotten, and expiration dates pass. This adds up to more wasted food than any other area of the supply chain, and that food doesn’t leave without a fight. Food makes up 21% of our landfill volume, and that food emits methane, doing a number on the planet’s atmosphere.
